This a very exciting ‘hands on’ Course that can help Fashion Design students at all levels. You may already be on a Fashion Design Degree course wanting to ‘get to grips’ with Draping on a Mannequin. At London Art Portfolio we can help you build up your confidence with a deeper, more experimental understanding of how to layer and manipulate fabric on a mannequin! Or, you may be at school or a Foundation course in art and design wanting to ‘get ahead’. In this way all students are introduced to the concept of innovative fashion design being born from a far more experimental approach to the design of fashion! This is what the art school and fashion runways are looking for!
At the start of this art course everyone will learn how to research for fashion design. All students are encouraged and introduced to possible starting points, which will include historical and contemporary thoughts and concepts for your personal research around a project. Sketchbook development for your ideas, fabric samples, note making and found oddities will be paramount from the start of the course. We will give you the support you need. Through this creative journey you will become more aware of the importance of research to become an innovative designer.
Whilst you pin and play with your fabric directly onto the dummy, you will learn how to drape, re-pin, layer, twist, knot and shape to create fashion design without actually making a garment, this is a very exciting and satisfying experience.
Throughout this process all students are encouraged to record their work with your own camera. Support and direction will be given during these photography stages, so please do not worry about this aspect. You are here to learn and we are here to help you! This part is essential though. Remember the documenting of your design development whilst you are on theDraping on the Mannequin course, is your 3D visual, photographic record of the various stages of your course progress. This in turn becomes a significant part of your whole portfolio preparation whether it be for study or work interviews.
Students are encouraged to print out some of this journey as we work through the course, staff will help you select. In the final stages of the course, the presentation of this work will be re-edited for your interview portfolio.
Beyond the course
If anyone requires further 1-1 Tutorial support beyond the course, London Art Portfolio can most certainly advise you on your whole physical portfolio preparation, sketchbook and design development, plus your digital portfolio presentation for your interview application stage and fashion illustration techniques too. Many Degree Fashion departments ask for Fashion Illustration too as part of your UCAS application process. But first enjoy and create on the wonderful Draping on the Mannequin short course.
