Ben Clarke

LAP Tutor

Ben studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art (Central Saint Martins), The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture and The Slade School of Fine Art, from where he graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art. Ben is currently a student on the Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School. As well as teaching at the London Art Portfolio, Ben teaches on the Royal Academy of Arts’ “Family Studio” Education programme and at the Hampstead School of Art.

Ben is primarily concerned with figurative and narrative work. In June 2014, he embarked on a project to document “The Cock Tavern”, an old Irish pub in Somers Town and its regulars. He works through direct, on-site observation, with drawing and photography, and, in the studio, using oil and acrylic paint. He is interested in German Expressionism, the Neue Sachlichkeit and the European tradition of painting.

In new dry point etchings and paintings of groups of people, Ben has looked to the plays and theatre of history for inspiration, to find ways of dramatizing behaviours and interactions between people.
