Best of British (Kitsch Britain) – Grayson Perry

The Vanity Of Small Differences at the Victoria Miro Gallery, Old Street, tells the story of Grayson Perry’s exploration into British taste. Made as part of his Channel 4 television shows ‘All in the Best Possible Taste’ Perry set out to examine and narrate the aesthetic choices of the British classes. The tapestries herald the aesthetic choices we make as part of our involvement in our tribes examining a range of lifestyle decisions such as clothing, cars, interior design, social gatherings, family structure etc. Perry employs the traditional craft of tapestry to elevate, pronounce and herald the scenes in a manner reminiscent of those seen in grand country homes depicting epic mythical battles intending to glorify and amaze those who spectate.

 The 6 tapestries playfully sit within Perry’s style of kitsch aesthetic British humour whilst pertaining sophistication in their execution.
