Best of British – Twiggy
Twiggy (1966) – Photographed by Barry Lategan
Twiggy was born in London in September 1949. She is best remembered as one of the first international supermodels and a fashion icon on the 1960s. She was named “The Face of ‘66” by The Daily Express when she was just 16 years old. Her photographic modelling success epitomised the sixties. Her success could said to have been launched by a famous haircut by Leonard and photographs taken by Barry Lategan in 1966. She still remains recognised by her name and face today, almost sixty years since.
She went on to become a successful actress and started her career by starring in Ken Russell’s film “The Boyfriend” for which she won two Golden Globe awards. She also recorded albums that encompassed a variety of music styles. Her most successful recordings have earned her two silver discs.
A collection of images of Twiggy has been released by The National Portrait Gallery simply titled “Twiggy – A Life in Photographs”. You can read about the book and the show which it accompanied here.
