The Journey of a Drop installation
Conceptual designer Rolf Sachs has responded to the grandeur of the V&A’s Henry Cole Wing Grand Staircase with an evocative installation that fully exploits the soaring height of the ornate space. This will be on show to the public for the first time during the London Design Festival.
There is a purity to the concept of this installation: individual drops of three primary-coloured inks are released from the great height of the staircase in measured intervals. You are able to watch the drops of ink land into a vast glass tank of illuminated liquid which then explodes into organic colours, each one unique and in a mesmerising form.
Upon arrival visitors are welcomed by amplified, choreographed soundscapes of droplets hitting the liquid. ”As the drops commence their journey, there will be a sense of anticipation, followed by a visual spectacle.’ states Sachs. “Each drop within the sequence creates a unique and magical colour explosion, mysteriously disappearing moments later.”
