The story of the government
Art and government? Can these two words ever exist together? They can for this exhibition!
It was the cost of decoration that prompted the use of art instead of wallpapers to cover the walls of government buildings in 1899. The Story of the Government Art Collection has 13,500 works dating from the 16th century to the present day displayed in over 420 government buildings worldwide including 10 Downing Street. Rare documents of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher are for the first time on display.
At Whitechapel Gallery until 2 September 2012
