Course Outline

The Half Term Drawing and Painting Class is designed to enhance and broaden the various skill-sets of the participants. Step by step, through each day of the one week art course, you can improve and enhance your portfolio using a range of fundamental drawing and painting techniques, building your portfolio to a higher level for applications. Students from all backgrounds and levels of experience are welcome.

The one week art course is ideal also for the fine art practitioner to develop your work in the field of drawing towards painting. There are many methods of work and ideas that you can develop from the experienced fine art tutor and practicing fine artist who exhibits regularly. This is a great way to learn from fellow artists and extend your creative social circle.

During the one week Half Term Drawing and Painting Class programme we will consider the history of western Art, as well as Theatre, and their implications for drawing. We will explore theatrics in painters from Bruegel, Titian and Caravaggio through to more modern movements such as Futurism and Expressionism. Their very different modes of figuration produce interesting questions for drawing.

Pictures can be like stage sets, with their protagonists, settings and props. We will consider the following:

  • How does a picture become a theatrical event?
  • How can drawing assist your understanding?
  • Is complex narrative worth trying to achieve, or is it preferable to give those who populate the painting much more basic, primal roles?

These are some of the investigations and questions we will debate and explore through drawing and paint. Students will be encouraged to carry out independent research investigating the crossovers between painting and theatre. This is a very exciting process where you will explore a variety of skills, techniques and how to apply them.
