Course Outline

The Beginners Evening Drawing Class is designed to enrich and broaden the various skill-sets of the participants. Step by step through this art class you can develop your work as a fine art practitioner in the field of drawing, (as an end in itself, or towards painting). Improve and enhance your portfolio through rigorous draftsmanship and add new work. Students from all backgrounds and levels of experience are welcome on this evening drawing class.

During the ten-week workshop, we will consider the history of western Art, as well as Theatre, and their implications for drawing. We will explore theatrics in painters from Bruegel, Titian and Caravaggio through to more modern movements such as Futurism and Expressionism. Their very different modes of figuration produce interesting questions for drawing. This art class is perfect for anyone who loves drawing and painting and is keen to learn more about the History of Art too!

Pictures can be like stage sets, with their protagonists, settings and props. Through this evening drawing class we will consider the following:

  • How does a picture become a theatrical event?
  • How can drawing assist your understanding?
  • Is complex narrative worth trying to achieve, or is it preferable to give those who populate the painting much more basic, primal roles?

Through the 10 week beginners evening drawing class programme, these are some of the investigations and questions that we will debate and explore through drawing and paint in more depth. Students will be encouraged to carry out independent research investigating the crossovers between painting and theatre. This is a very exciting process.
