Sculpture Inspired by Brunel
Julia Dennis the extremely talented Art Director of London Art Portfolio is currently exhibiting her work at the Brunel Museum in London.
Julia’s research is often based on specific cultural artefacts and their relationship to society in the past and present day. Her interest in history, anthropology and society has always been evident in her work. Personal experiences of living in Papua New Guinea and later as a mother between Italy and the UK have led to a range of exhibitions in sculpture, photography, film and installation.
Her Brunel exhibition is a site specific exhibition celebrating the great engineering achievements of both March Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Their innovations include the Thames Tunnel in between Rotherhithe and Wapping, the Great Western Railway, St.Pancras Station, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a series of steamships including the first propeller-driven transatlantic steamship and numerous important bridges, tunnels and viaducts!
Julia has created a series of works consisting of found, ready made tools from the18th and 19th century that reflect a period of industry and craft skills in a range of metals and wood. The line and form of her works aim to capture a sense of time and place whilst maintaining aesthetic simplicity.
This introductory exhibition is part of a larger exhibition that will be held at the London Art Portfolio Gallery space nearer the summer at 185 Tower Bridge Road, SE1 2UF. 02074036881. 07919846746. London Art Portfolio runs a range of Portfolio Preperation courses and evening wokshops.
