Ben studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art (Central Saint Martins), The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture and The Slade School of Fine Art, from where he graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art. In 2018 Ben completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Drawing at the Royal Drawing School London.  As well as teaching at the London Art Portfolio, Ben teaches on the Royal Academy of Arts’ “Family Studio” Education programme, at the Hampstead School of Art and at the Royal Drawing School on the Young Artists Associates programme for children aged 10 to 14 on weekly drawing clubs that take place at the National Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery and  British Museum.Ben is primarily concerned with figurative and narrative work. In June 2014, he embarked on a project to document “The Cock Tavern”, an old Irish pub in Somers Town and its regulars. He works through direct, on-site observation, with drawing and photography, and, in the studio, using oil and acrylic paint. He is interested in German Expressionism and the Neue Sachlichkeit and the European tradition of painting. In 2018 he won an invitation for an artist in residence at the famous Museo del Prado in Madrid Spain. This three-month on-site residency gave Ben the opportunity to make studies and paintings from their amazing collection, of historic paintings by masters such as Titian, Rubens, Velázquez, Goya and El Greco.

Through drawing, drypoint etchings and paint, Ben enjoys spending time observing and mingling with groups of people. He often looks to plays and the theatre of history for inspiration, to find ways of dramatizing behaviours and interactions between people. He thrives off this crossover between painting and theatre.

At London Art Portfolio Ben delivers an amazing life drawing and life painting programme, which supports the ongoing portfolio project course programme. He supports and advises students with career advice and portfolio preparation at degree and masters level. He also has a genuine interest in Critical and Contextual Studies embracing both the history of art and the more contemporary periods of art. He encourages students to investigate, debate and question through drawing and paint. He is an experienced LAP portfolio preparation tutor.
